Hookahs For Sale: Used and New

Hookahs For Sale - A Hookah What??

A strange looking apparatus has sprung up at my house and taken residence...and it looks suspiciously close to what we used to call a "bong" back in the 70's. My daughter however bought this Hookah for sale at a specialty store down the street (2010) - to smoke tobacco out of. I have to admit, it's a beautiful piece of artwork. The aroma that comes forth is also amazingly nice (it smells like blueberry wafting through the house) but I have to wonder... how did this throwback from the 70's show up again?

In my sleuthing I found that Hookahs for sale and smoking from a Hookah have apparently become a new mainstream form of "entertainment" for mostly the younger generation. The practice however is not new - Hookahs have been around for 500 years or so. Smoking from a Hookah has been practiced among many cultures and for various reasons. For some it's a form of "social bonding" and/or a pleasant way to relax and unwind.

A Little History on Hookah

Hookah (Wiki definition)

"The exact time and place where the hookah originated from is not known. According to Cyril Elgood (PP.41, 110) who does not mention his source, it was in India where Hakim Abu’l-Fatḥ Gīlānī (d. 1588), an Iranian physician at the court of the Mughal emperor Akbar I (1542 - 1605 AD) invented the idea. [15] [16] [17] Following the European introduction of tobacco to India, Hakim Abul Fateh Gilani a descendant of Abdul-Qadir Gilani came from Gilan a province in the north of Iran to India who was later a physician in the court of Mughal raised concerns after smoking tobacco became popular among Indian noblemen, and subsequently envisaged a system which allowed smoke to be passed through water in order to be 'purified'. [15]"

Interestingly enough, I did not realize that the practice of Hookah was as popular as it was until local "Hookah Bars" started springing up in our area. At least 3 Hookah lounges have sprung up within a mile of our house within the last year. The reason my daughter bought her own hookah was to save money (instead of going to lounges) and to share her hookah with her friends (they use this instead of smoking cigarettes) She also interestingly enough also "quit" smoking cigarettes recently...hmmm...

Is Hookah Healthy?

Which brings us to another question...is using a Hookah healthy? Some reports say it's worse than cigarette smoking, while some reports say that results are "inconclusive" as to whether Hookah is less dangerous than regular cigarette smoking. I have tried it a couple times, found it mildly pleasant but I did not feel compelled to go out and "smoke" from it. Perhaps for me it's a little too close to doing something that was illegal along long time ago (which I no longer do btw ) Judging however by the number of people socializing with my daughter on the porch with her hookah, there are lot of younger adults that have not only embraced the hookah but have found a new type of "social bonding" by passing the pipe.

Do I advocate smoking from a Hooka? There are the potential health risks. I think the pipes are beautiful, I think the idea of using the Hookah to smoke tobacco in is better than using it to do illegal drugs, the social connectedness they experience is intriguing...

but then so is having a family get together at the park... .

So if my daughter gets tired of her new fad, anybody want to buy a Hookah for sale?

Dearest Dorsi!!

What an interesting Hub! So glad you wrote it and shared it with all of us!!

Those Hookahs are beautiful!! I would love to have a sapphire blue one sitting on my living room table! Yet I don't smoke - anything!

I am a little taken back by how casually you write about your daughter smoking tobacco?? (Or whatever?) Tobacco is the only legal substance that when used as directed will kill you!

I don't know when I became such a prude but to me there seems to be something wrong with the parental equation as your outlined it above? Aren't we supposed to protect our kids from harmful things?

I know from your Hubs you are a wonderful, thoughtful, caring person who takes being a parent very seriously!! I would love to be enlightened??

Blessings to you and yours always, Earth Angel!

I have never heard of tabacco being smoked in. I only of opium being smoked in which they use in all the East and Middle East countries.

The Loan Arranger)hmm...

Earth Angel) I suppose you would have to know her to understand. She is in her late 20's, and we discuss alot of things. I'm not crazy about anything that isn't healthy but people will do what they want to do. I only advise and let them make their own decisions. I come from a generation that used

"bongs" for far worse things so I suppose I look at hookah smoking (tobacco) far less dangerous than drugs. Still bad for you but not like smoking crack or cocaine from one. This is definitley a new fad among younger kids that is not going away anytime soon. Sort of like when Starbucks became the popular thing to do.

Not justifying it just trying to explain.

hello hello) Yes tobacco, a more supposedly "purified" form is what hookahs are normally used for. They come in flavors and are used with a "briquet" charcoal type small brick to light the tobacco. It's definitley different.

In all honesty, one day I believe we will find health benefits to tobacco. There's some reason it grows in the ground, we just don't know why yet. I mean the stuff we're putting on shelves will kill you, and you'll go down ugly. But I just went to a conference where they say the latest research shows a reduction in pre-eclampsia in pregnant women who smoke. Of course, there's that whole low birth weight, respiratory disorder, and cantankerous newborn thing. Who knows? Great title.

Also, great to meet ya!

ahostagesituation) Nice to see you and it was great meeting you. The fact that tobacco grows naturally does make me wonder if it has some medicinal type purpose...that's interesting about the pre-eclampsia research. There are so

many things bad for us nowadays...and I know smoking is not healthy. Thanks for stopping by.

Hey Dorsi, I haven't even heard of these things- "hookah". I've heard on commercials on the radio, but never bothered to check them out. Thank you for sharing. I learned something new today and that's a good thing. :)

Thanks Mom! Lol! Well it lasted for a short period of time for me seeing as though my brother knocked it over and the vase broke and I had no desire to purchase another one! It was fun while it lasted. Not saying I would never hit a Hookah again, just saying for now I've had my fun. Great hub mom.
