My Dog Got Hit By A Car. What do I do?
79A Traumatic Experience When Your Dog Gets Hit By A Car
My dog Karma got hit by a car last night, and it was one of the most traumatic things I've ever experienced. Karma, our border collie pup, slipped out last night when my sons were visiting with their dad in the front yard- and no one noticed that anything was wrong until Karma came slinking back to the house- bruised and banged up.
My oldest sons first words were "Karma's face is gone!", which put me into a total panic. Not understanding what had just happened, I looked at her in horror and thought that part of her face was missing. Although there was blood everywhere and she was scraped up, her face WAS NOT missing, but her face did look terrible. I actually thought she had gotten bitten by another animal, because the abrasions on her face were actual holes, and they looked like bite marks.
Not only was her face mangled but she had abrasions on her feet and she was walking funny- and panting hard. We laid her down in the kitchen where my husband tried to calm her down and get a better look at her injuries. We all thought that she had gotten bitten by something- because the wounds looks like bite marks.
After a speedy trip to the emergency vet at 2 in the morning, the vet took one look at her and said it looked like she had been hit by a car. They took X-Rays and said she had 2 broken ribs and had sustained a hit to her liver. Apparently when she was hit by the car she must have tumbled and that's what caused her head injuries and the abrasions on her paws.
Karma spent the night at the vet in intensive care- she was in shock (that's why she was panting hard) and she had to have IV's, antibiotics, and careful observation throughout the night.

Karma Before the Accident
$1,000 Vet Bill
After a $1,000 vet bill and a a sleepless night, we were able to pick up our baby this morning and bring her home with us ( we actually brought her to work with us, and she hasn't left our side all morning)
We have all been completely traumatized and vow to keep a closer eye on our precious fur-baby.
What To Do If Your Dog Gets Hit By A Car
What do you do if your dog gets hit by a car?
First of all, don't panic. Your dog might be in shock and already traumatized. Try to stay as calm as possible. Your dog needs you to be calm right now. If your dog will let you, try to see what type of injuries have happened, and then call your vet and give them as much information as possible.
If your dog is bleeding profusely or injured badly try to gently pick him/her up and slide him onto a flat board, being very careful. Drive your dog to an emergency veterinary hospital ( you might be tempted to speed but keep it safe)
Don't feel bad if your dog is behaving strangely towards you. Your dog had just suffered a traumatic event, and his/her behavior may be affected.
Injuries To My Dog After Getting Hit By A Car
Symptoms of Shock in a Dog
Karma was suffering from shock after she got hit, and if not treated she could have died. Here are some of the symptoms of shock in a dog that you need to look out for:
* Pale mucous membranes (inside of the gums, mouth, eyes, etc.)
* Weakness
* Rapid pulse
* Tangible loss of heat to the extremities, particularly the ears.
In Karma's case her heart was beating very rapidly, and on the way to the vet her gums started getting very pale and she started becoming unresponsive to us.
In general - shock in a dog can be one the most deadly consequences of a serious injury.
Remember if your dog gets hit by a car to make sure you look out for the possible signs of an injury or shock - even if there are no visible injuries.
In Karma's case most of her injuries were visible but even in a mild injury a dog can be injured internally - and needs to be closely watched.

- Dog Shock
A Dog likely will in its life suffer some kind of health problem, disease or illness. You, the canine caregiver must diagnose correctly based of symptoms observed and often treal without help for a dog veterinary and run serious risks.

The poor baby...I'm glad she will be okay...
Oh that is terrible, but luckily she will be ok. I can understand your feelings, the money doesnt matter as long as our loved ones are ok. I mean I know its hard to pay so much. But I would do it to to save our wonderful pets.
Another great article Dorsi . I have lived through many situations with our dog. And the waiting I found was so hard to find out whether they will make it or not.
Thanks for sharing
A disturbing event... bad enough when your dog faces natural debilitation. It is always hard, but I'm sure your care will help the healing.
Hi Dorsi
I am so sorry that your dog was hurt but I am so glad she is doing better. It is amazing that you are able to write such a thorough and thoughtful article while taking care of Karma and family.
I do hope your dog recovers and I'm sure she will. In hindsight, one of the most traumatizing events in my young life involved hitting a dog on the way to work at 5:00 am. It was dark, the road was curvy, and there was an oncoming car with its brights on in the oncoming lane. To avoid being blinded, I looked to the right of the road and then felt this large thud and whelp. I knew what had happened but was unable to think straight to go back and look. It truly was a sickening feeling.
When I finally got the nerve to go back and help the dog, I was already late for work so I called my dad (at 5:00 am) and he went looking. He knew right where to go but never found the poor animal. Needless to say, I felt terrible for a long while and always cringe when I see dogs, cats, deer, etc. dead on the road. I'm so glad your little dog is fine.
I don't think the dog I hit survived since the headlight where it hit was shattered and I had minor wheel well damage. It was a big dog but I never really saw it. Your story reminds us all of the fragility of all life.
I'm so sorry that Karma has to endure this pain, but heartened that she'll be all right. Thank you for sharing this.
Jim Henry
Oh ...I am so sorry ...what an awful happening. I lost my pet about two years ago this summer and I will never forget her. Yes, they are one of your best friends. Thank you so much for sharing all you did in your time of sadness. You made good choices when Karma needed you.
Just to add a light story to this ...I got my Cody for free and I always laughed at the fact that I was always buying her back from the Vet. She was a very sick dog and always got sick on the weekend when I needed to pay for emergency care ...that always demanded at least $300 deposit ...then usually around 6 to 700 dollars at pick up. But to tell you the truth, I would do it all again. There is no price you can put on them ..they are priceless. I miss her!
My best to you and your Karma ...may Karma grow healther daily ...my prayers!
Get well soon Karma!
Poor thing- lucky for her she has good people looking after her!
Thanks for sharing with us. Karma is a beauiful dog (even after the accident). Get well soon karma
I hope Karma (a beautiful dog with a beautiful name) can feel all our love for her and recover completely from this terrible event. Thank you for sharing this with us and for being such a good "mother" to Karma ;)
OMG! This is so awful! I am so grateful that she is o.k. I know it was traumatic for all of you. Guess it was a crazy day as hubby and I were in an auto accident yesterday as well. We are o.k. but I have sore spots today that I never knew existed! I am sure Karma will as well. It sounds like she is in great care, though! Hope all of you are better soon!
Bonnie
I am so happy to hear that Karma is going to be ok. I can only imagine what you went through as our dog is one of our kids and I am sure that you feel the same way. Bless you both.
How awful, poor dog. Very good advice in case anyone encounters the same situation. By the way, that was an amazing bill for the vet, was that before or after insurance cover? In France you can take insurance cover for your pets, which would cover a "hit and run away" event as well as thrid party insurance.
A get well wish for Karma :)
Oh Dorsi, I'm so glad the story had a happy ending. I've been afraid to come and read this, just in case.
Your advice may come in very handy for someone. They read it now and it will spring to their mind when they need it most.
Great article, glad Karma is bouncing back.
Thank you for sharing this. I'm so glad Karma is recovering! She's very fortunate to have such a loving family. Too many people would balk at a $1000 vet bill.
Dorsi, I noticed that too.
Hugs, I hope your dog recovers well :) Sheri
Oh Dorsi-- how tough for you and your family as well as Karma. Glad to hear that she is on the mend and all of you are doing well. Thanks for sharing with us and I love the pix of Karma--what a sweetie:-)
Aww Dorsi I feel so bad for you. I know exactly how you feel. When I was 10 my Samoyed husky was run over and killed by a car right in front of me. And more recently my cat got out of the house and came back after several days with an injury that required an amputation. They're just like our babies aren't they?
xoxoCyne
So glad to hear Karma is on the mend. I had a baby named Lucky that I had to rush to the vet after 3 pits attacked him. I know the shaky, scared feeling of losing a pet (family member) by trauma. He pulled through and lasted another 10 years before another desert creature got him. He was just too friendly and thought all animals were playmates.
Best wishes for Karma and give her a hug for me!
MJ
Emergency vet services are very expensive, but worth every penny. The ER's job is to take the critical to the manageable. I hope that everyone reading your hub has the number of an ER vet stuck on their refrigerator with a magnet.
Princessa, most in the US do not purchase animal health insurance. That industry has a long way to go in terms of credibility and affordability. Are you saying that France discounts or provides animal health insurance as a part of the taxes you pay? If, so, I've found yet another reason to move there!
Dorsi, I am so happy for your puppy and your family. A good dog is worth it all, yes? And your doggie's name isn't Karma for no good reason. Thank you very much for describing the symptoms of shock. Those are not something we are trained to look for.
Warmest regards, ST.
Oh my gosh!! The poor dog. She is such a trouper. I am so glad to hear that Karma will get better. My heart goes out to you Dorsi! Steph
Hey I love your Dog! I am glad that nothing wrong happened. I lost my dog and I cried and cried. Thanks for your excellent Hub that talks about what you do when your dog meets with an accident. My Dog's case was different and she died due to her old age. Our Pets indeed are our best friends no doubt about it.
So sorry to hear that your dog got hurt - hope she recovers quickly
My poor Pitbull Harley was attacked by a neighborhood bully....a Bloodhound. He wasn't hurt but he was scared to go outside for a few days. He had been raised with Labs and thus he was always a playful calm dog. When the Bloodhound attacked him he grounded him and started going for his neck. Thankfully one of my other dogs, a mountain cur jumped in and saved the day. I don't know what causes dogs to scale a fence just to harass another dog. Likewise I don't understand why people would purposely hit an animal. It's one thing to accidentally do it but I've seen people swerve to intentionally hit an animal. I hope this didn't happen to Karma...or else her name will ring true on the perpetrator.
Im sooo sorry and heart broken to hear this sad news about Karma! She looks soo beautiful and kind! My heart goes out to you and i wish Karma a full speedy recovery..
I hope this bad incident will have some good with this first hand information for other dog carers whomay unfortunetly be in this same position as you!
Please give Karma a gentle rub for me pleeaasee:)
Aw, man. What a beautiful dog! I'm happy to hear Karma is recovering. As a side comment to mindaink's comment, my Aunt's dog was *shot* with a air powered pellet rifle. In humans, this would hurt like a ... well, you know... in dogs it can be deadly. It nipped some of her intestine and there was internal bleeding. She's recovered, now, but the vet costs were astronomical & it was very touch and go. People need to show more empathy for animals. I'm happy Karma has such wonderful caring "parents" to take care of her.
Lucky Karma, good job Mom! Cars and pets, makes me upset to think about how many unfortunate animals I have seen after the tires roll! C.S.
I'm so sorry to hear about your doggie. So sweet! I've suffered through this as well. Unfortunately, as a child we lived in Ireland and when our dog was hit by a car, we had bad luck with the local vet. The vet wouldn't treat him. We had to take him to a friend's farmhouse who helped put him down with a shotgun. I know...sounds barbaric. Thankfully, this country has better treatment for dogs and pets in general. I'll never forget beautiful George.
I'm just glad she's OK. It could have been so much worse.
My heart goes out to you. Thank God, she's fine. My dog is a big part of our family and the thought of losing her....
Such a sad story, but I am happy she managed to come home to tell you so that you could do what was right for her. Your article is excellent, Dorsi, it is well written and informative, and no doubt it will help many animal lovers. A job very well done by all accounts. I'll send my thoughts and prayers toward Karma.
I am so sorry that Karma had to go through all this, but thank goodness she has come out on top! Take good care of her, she is a doll! (as they all are!)
I'm very glad to hear that Karma is recovering from such traumatic injuries. It's very sad when a pet gets hit by a car. But your description of the symptoms of shock and what to do when a dog gets hit by a car may help save the life of someone else's dog some day. Karma is lucky to have such a loving family.
Great hub, I'm so glad that she's Ok.
I'm glad that Karma is OK and will pull through this. She has such an expressive and human like face. Border collies are real sweetheart dogs.
I had an incident several years ago where one of my favorite tuxedo cats, Bonomo, disappeared. I had never been able to find him after days of searching and posting signs. That is the worst thing when you don't know what happened.
Dorsi, I also agree with you about being careful driving. We have tons of wildlife where I live. I've angered passengers in my car several times for coming to a screeching halt when even a squirrel crosses the street.
Get WELL KARNA!!
me and my wife (lindsie) were not so lucky. we live in a gated community in lake cali. i went for a bike ride and LINDSIE WAS PAINTING OUR NEW HOUSE. SO A GIRL HIT THE DOG 3 HOUSES DOWN AND SHE SEEMED FINE JUST IN SHOCK. SCRAPES ABOVE HER EYES AND EAR. 95MPH TO THE VET! SHE SAID SHE WAS FINE GAVES HERE SOME MEDS FOR THE PAIN AND WE WENT HOME. SHE WAS SORE BUT SHE SEEMED FINE AND WENT TO HER BED AND SLEP FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS. SHE GOT UP I LAID ON THE FLOOR FORHER AND SHE CURLD UP NEXT TO ME. THEN... SHE STARTED TO , LIKE CURL AROUND TO BIT HER BUM BUT SHE WAS GOING IN CIRCLE AND NOT ACOMPLISHIG ANYTHING. WE THOUGHT SHE WAS COMING OFF HERE MEDS. WE DIDNT THINK ANTHING OF IT SO WE WENT TO BE ABOUT 10 OCLOK. I HAD TO WAKE AT 4AM AND MY WIFE THEN SHE WOKE UP OLLIE AND SHE WAS FOAMING AT THE MOUTH SEIZING AND BREATHING HARD.95 TO THE VET! (SHE GOT HIT AT 6PM) SO AT 3AM BACK TO THE VET AND NOW OLLIE HAS TO FIGHT FOR HER LIFE. BLEEDING AND SWEELING IN THE BRAIN!!!!!!! WTF. THEY GAVE HER MORE MEDS HOPING... WELL, AT 7PM MY WIFE GOT THE CALL. SO SHE HAD HER PUT DOWN. LINDSIE IS DEVESTATED. IM PISSED! SHOULDNT THE DAM DOC LOOKED AT HER HEAD!I DONT GET IT. WHY WOULDNT SHE LOOK AT THE HEAD. SHE GOT HIT!!!!!!!!!!! $700 LATER NO DOG AND SADNESS. WE WILL MISS HER SO MUCH!
Dorsi;
I know how you feel when it comes to your "baby". I'm glad that she wasn't seriously hurt and that she is doing better. We have a 11 mo. old min pin and our friends say that she must have some form of cat in her and she has used up 2 of her nine lives.
About a month ago, she got into a toxin posion in which she almost died from. She had to spend the night at the emergency vet hospital. So we know all about a sleepless night-waiting to here the phone ring with bad news.
Luckily she came out of it and we later did find what happen. It's a long story and you can read it on Leah's Hub page.
Then exactly two weeks after that, she got lost in the woods with a little dress one, leash and gentle lead....She was gone for 12 hours and we (or rather I) thought for sure she was dead, because she got hung up somewhere in the woods. Long story short, my husband refuse to give up and heard this small little whimper much later that night. She was all tangled in brush and could not move. Other than being hungry and thirsty, she was fine and very grateful to be back in her mommy's arms again.
Since that incident we have broken down and bought the shock collar, and been training her on the "come command" and "sit-stay". It's working so far....By the way-the gentle lead went in the trash...
Hope to hear more on your "babies"...
Sharon, Brian & Leah Kay
My dog Jasper was just hit by a car two days ago. He did not make it, and there were no visiable signs of injuries. Jasper was nine and a lab mix. Is this possible or could he have had a heartattack. We will miss our guy very much. Thanks for all your stories.
Jen
i no this is of topic but i saw my 1 year old dog get hit by a car last night i cant shake the memory of me screaming her name and that was it she didnt make it thorugh the accident :(
Hi Dorsi
Just sending you and Karma blessings and best wishes
Jan
That is so sad. Ironic that the dog's name is Karma. When I was a kid my dog got hit twice by a car. The dog was an iron rock though. Actually dented the second car. The last thing I would ever want to do is accidentally hit a dog named Karma. That is just scary..
3 Days ago I let my dogs out and they went after a cat. I called them back and my Border Collie Lilly came running back. It happened! she got hit, most tramatic event of my life. I couldnt do anything. I just screamed not my baby thats all that could come out. Like you said losing karma would of been like losing your best friend, I lost mine. She died immediatly. Pet Karma for me because she is a lucky girl.
my dog got hit by a car 2/6/09 i was hurt and we love him he is a family dog and a old lady hit him i want to kill her
That is broken my heart ;Im so sad about your dog and If Iwere you Ikill who did that its a big murder for your best friend......
Do you know if you can sue for the vet bills if you know who hit your dog? My dog was hit, and they stopped, then took off. I know who they are.
He was hit last friday, we took him to the hospital, and they kept him for the last 5 days. He had no broken bones but his diaphram was torn and his stomach, intestines, and spleen was wrapped up around in his heart in his chest cavity, they did surgery yesterday to fix him up. He looks so sad with that big incision running down his chest and stomach. And he lost a lot of weight because he didn't eat until today (5 days later) :(
Hope KARMA is ok now and you and your family are well.
we are going through a traumatic time our little man sammy an 8 month (cross) jackrussel/carin got hit by a car monday ,sammy as been at the vets since, sammy as got 4 broken bones in his pelvis
when his bowels are in full working order the vets have said he could come home,we are doing research on helping sammy with supporting his back legs etc while sammys bones knit together
Dorsi we are missing our sammy so much its hard to breath at times but its helped me a little by writing to you and telling you our problem sammy is such a wonderfull family dog and has brought so much joy to all of us he just has to get better
and i have to say the young ladys car that hit sammy was very upset and it was an accident.
sylvia & john
im sylvia and john gran child and im very sad about sammy but i hope he recovers soon xx
my dog got hit by a car a hour ago right infront of me, he didn't make it. rip cuddles.
Glad she is doing well but vet's bills are terrifying, aren't they. She is very beautiful. Thanks for the advice re shock etc.
Our Labrador Retriever, Joey, also (recently) got hit by a car. We and our dogs are the lucky ones; others (like dj watters' dog and like Jaspar and have not been so lucky. Dogs cannot tell us how they are feeling or what they need, so it's important for us to try to understand how they "think" and feel, and what they need, and to remain calm and pleasant at all times. Your dog is not interested in how he/she looks; he's a dog. If you are sad, your dog will be sad. Give your dog lots of love and attention, and appreciate how lucky you both are, and express that to him/her!
My dog was hit by a car this morning. My dad tried to bring it to the vet hospital, but it was closed. He had his last breath in my dad's arms. His name was Rocko. He just sat at a safe distance and watched the rest of the family play, but it didn't seem to be his thing. When he wanted to, he came to join us and nibble at our toes. He instigated fights with our bigger dog, and never backed down from a fight. Despite his size, he had alot of heart, and alot of fight in him. Now he's gone.
It is so scary when a pet is hit by a car. I had that experience once and let me just say it was frightening. You gave some good tips on shock. Thanks.
My beloved Brandi girl (chocolate lab) was hit by a pick-up truck Tuesday morning at 6am. She NEVER goes on the road...we are driving ourselves crazy trying to figure out why! It's been 3 days and I cry every day. We took her to the hospital where they tried to fix. She was in shock, but they had to do the surgery to stop the bleeding. At 12:45 I hung up the phone where I was told she was progressing. We were given new hope that our baby of 10 years would pull through. 15 minutes later we received a call that her heart had stopped. WHY??!! We are all completely devastated. She was the sweetest, gentlest dog in the world. I miss her so much!!
Your fur baby is beautiful! I am so glad she's alright! I have to watch my Minature Pinchers alot as well. The girl (DEDE) wants to get out of the fence all the time! Blessings!!
At least she was ok in the end. Keeping calm and knowing where the closest emergency vet is in these kinds of situations makes all the difference.
That's karma
Dont worry I feel the same way it also happend to my dog. I live on a farm my dog sleeps in his den next to the house every morning I call him he comes running for his meal.. That morning I call him and nothing no response I call him again and again nothing I did not hesitate as I felt something was wrong I asked one of the farmers on the farm have you seen the dog and he quickly replied he is not dead I was shocked what kind of an answer was that. He led me to the dog where they had him in one of the horse stables his front left leg was shattered held together with some bandages his skin on his back was gone. Aparently they told me the farm owners son ran over him last night. LAST NIGHT Why wasnt I told that same second. Aparently he hit him with the car kept driving and asked one of the workers to go back and see what happend he didnt even stop.. I no longer work there I paid for the vet bills myself over 2,000USD I didnt ask for any compensation or anything as part of it is my fault for not leashing him at night,, the worst part was I never heard a sorry from anyone the only thing I was told was Well he is black hard to see him at night.
my border collie (Buster) got hit by a car yesterday he now has a broken leg (i saw the x-rays it was bad) and a hip that is out of place he is having surgery tonight and he will be in the kennel most of the time and we had the options of 1. cutting his leg off (NO!) 2. having surgery to fix it (YES) or 3. put him to sleep (HECK NO!) we chose 2. fix it with surgery.
I lost the grip on my dog's collar as I was taking her leash off and she took off. My grandson and I tried desperately to get her but she got hit. I opted to put her down at the emergency vet's. Her front leg was shattered from the humerus, another wound on a back leg and rectal bleeding. I figured that was internal and after a morphine dose, decided not to put her through the mill. My heart was broken and the sound of that vehicle slamming its brakes was sickening. She was having the time of her life, running, being free, not knowing her danger. Very hard to deal with.
im sorry about the dog it hurt
aww thanks god your dogs ok i watched my dog get ran over 2 days ago his pelvis was broke in 5 places and his legs was broke in three the vet had to put her down its been so traumatic
e and my 10 year old son have been crying everynight, the nights are worse cuz shes not there to cuddle with and the last memeories is of her in such pain and looking at me wiht those eyes pleading like, help me mama, its been horrible ordeal...
well, i am sad to read about the number of dogs who have been hit and didn't make it. my baby, jack, got hit yesterday, and luckily, after a night at the animal emergency, he's back in our house. i cried all day yesterday. i felt horrible because i was the one who left the door open. he saw a dog and wanted to go say hi...but, there was a pick-up truck coming that jack didn't seem to notice. it hit him, he rolled over, and the truck went over him. lucky for him (and us), the tires did not run over him. he's a little banged up, but he's just resting here at my feet and i am so relieved!!! anyone know how you can help a dog after such a trauma? that was what i was searching for when i came upon this strand. my heart goes out to all of you.
Im so glad for you that she is alright. My two year old sheltie was hit by a FedEx truck yesterday and died instantly. It really is awful losing a pet because they do become your best friend.
you were very lucky. my dog got hit by a car yesterday and he died about 5 minuted afterwards, it was so horrible
You guys are very lucky. I am so happy for you guys because it is very painful to go through with the unhappy ending. Our 4.5 years old Yorkie got hit by some car and die. I hold him in my arm it is so painful!!!
i feel sad for karma but i heard she is getting better!!!!!!!! and i love people like you taking care of your dogs!!!!!!!!
I'm glad Karma is ok :)
Vets should make affordable prices for pets injuries , what would they do if their pet was dying and they had to pay 1,000 dollars?
Well its worth while to keep our pets alive =]
ye are all so pityfull about the bloody dog and have any of you thought about the driver and their car a dog went in front of my car and caused 800 euro worth of damage that i am left to pay
My dog has tonight been hit by a car - she is a lhaso apso, small dog, luckily didn't go under the wheel. Thought she was bleeding from behind her eye but luckily is is a wound above it. Vet said best not to bring her in and let her get through the stress tonight although it is obvious she has damage to her back leg - is walking on it (though I keep trying to get her to stay still) though limping and as I described to the vet seems to be sticking out more than the other. So so worried, she is such a lovely loving wee dog - worst thing being it was my daughter who had her at the time she got hit so my daughter is now also distraught and blaming herself. Not going to be a good night, just want to get to the vet as quick as possible though understand their reasons about the stress factor that if her life isn't in danger to get her levels down before then.... doesn't make me feel better though - just want to help her.
I am happy that Karma is doing well now. We weren't so lucky with our little sausage dog. He got hit by a car and after a month recovered physically. Unfortunately the accident effected him mentally. He became really viscious and I am the only one who can go near him now without being bitten. The vet says he might get back to normal, but he might have sustained some brain damage. Poor little guy was so friendly before all he wanted to do was chase his ball. Now he's not interested in it at all. Fingers crossed he gets better. We have to keep our new puppy away from him as well otherwise he just gets attacked.
Hi Dorsi, thanks for your reply. He's doing a bit better the last couple of days. The problem is we have to keep an eye on him all the time as his moods are so variable. The new puppy is scared stiff of him which isn't good.
Maybe misery loves company, but reading this post is helpful to me. My dog Zola was bit by a car 3 weeks ago and is now officially in the recovery stage.
My dog was hit by a car yesterday and he was bleeding and he was run over and we took him to the vet and decided to put him out of his misery and now he is gone
Monday night (11/29/10) my poor little Bichon Rudy got hit by a medium sized truck, and died instantly. My daughter and I were running to him, and saw him get hit. It looked like the tire broke his back, and his front and back legs went up like a "U" shape. In the seconds it took to get to him, he was sprawled on the grass on his little belly, with his paws outstretched. He was already gone. I picked him up like a rag doll, he was so limp... and carried him home. I held him in my arms for about an hour; I kept wishing he would wake up...he was too young (8 years old)too full of life and joy to go...He was my baby! But he didn't wake up...I held him until he started to get cold.My husband got a basket for him and we wrapped him in a blanket and put his little stuffed bear with him so he would not be alone. The next day we took him to our vet, and they were wonderful there, with so much compassion and sympathy for us! They brought us in a private room to pick out his little final resting place. We chose a pretty oak box with carvings. It will have his nameplate on it..."Rudy". We will bring him home in about 1 week.
My heart goes out to all of you before my post who have also lost a part of your heart and soul....My you find Peace, Diane
my dog got hit bye a car on peachanga his name was rocky i loved him so much and bang so can every 1 pray for my dog hes a puppy pleas
Hi Justin,
I will certainly pray for you and Rocky.
Peace be with you.
Dorsi,
Thank you so much for your kind heartfelt words.
It helps to know that I can share mine and Rudy's story with a dog lover such as yourself. Thank you for providing
this site for us.
Warmly, Diane and Rudy
Hi all, the comments on here are so touching and my heart goes out to each of you. My baby Denzle was hit by a car this morning as he wriggled free from his lead to get to my partner (I was attending an interview and a friend was holding Denzle on his lead on the opposite side of the road). I returned from my interview and was told about this horrific tragedy. Denzle is only an 8 mnth old blue merle collie with beautiful blue eyes. The man who hit him took my partner, friend and Denzle to the vets this morning. I collected him at tea time and took him to hospital for the evening. I cannot control my emotions, my partner can't close his eyes due to seeing him laid in the road. Denzles liver enzyme is at a shocking figure of 1000 (10-100 is ok). He cannot and will not try to lift himself off the ground, he is very quiet, breathing rapidly and shallowly, panting, heart rate is rapid, and is not even 1% of the Denzle I know (I know this is to be expected)! Iv jus rung the hospital to check on him.... The vet said he is stable for now, on iv fluids and pain relief. He is not stable enough to be put under a general anaesthetic so they can position him fr scans etc to ascertain whether he has internal damage or not, yet their concerns for his liver enzyme are massive. The vet said she couldn't say for sure if he'd make it through this yet. We all feel at such a loss. I just wanted to air my feelings on here with some like-minded, dog loving people! Afterall, Denzle is like my 3rd child, he is part of our family and I'm praying he continues to be so for many many years yet. Xxxxx
Hiya Dorsi. Thank-you for your reply and kind words. It's been a tough time, but I'm thrilled to report that the vets have called and said he can come home this evening. He has brightened up considerably today, and although they have not x-rayed his leg the drip with pain relief seems to have helped. I have to keep my eye on him and take him back in on Saturday for a check up and possible x-rays. I'm so so happy. Our house has not felt like a home since this has happened.
I'm am so pleased that Karma is ok.... She is a stunner!!!! We should let her n Denzle meet up, the babies would be absolutely out of this world!!!!
Thanks again for creating this site, for sharing your story and for caring. All the best, give Karma a kiss from us. She deserves it xxx
My 6 mth old Boston/Pug mix got away from my husband tonight. He had taken the dogs out and turned away for a second to spread some sand on the ice in the driveway and Bug was gone. We found him in the road only a few hundred feet from the driveway. We scooped him up and drove the 40 min to the emergency vet. It was the longest 40 min of my life. He wasn't responsive and shock had set in. Thank god there are no broken bones. Only head trauma over his left eye and some scrapes and bruises. He'll have to stay at least tonight at the vet with fluids and to get cleaned up. The vet says (but no guarentees) that the worst will be his eye and he might loose the sight in it. Hopefully that will be all.
Thank you everyone for telling your stories. It is helpful to talk about this terrifying incident with others that have experienced it.
How is Karma doing now? My newly adopted 5 1.2 year old was hit by a car. She is okay after incident, however she shakes her head fairly frequently. Does yours?
Hi Dorsi,
When I posted my story about Rudy, I was so traumatized, I didn't realize that you were Karma's Mom. You are so blessed to have Karma pull through her (and yours)ordeal. I am still in much pain over losing Rudy, and find comfort in connecting with others on this site who have been through similar situations. My sincere good wishes to you and Karma for a long and healthy life together! You are truly a special person to offer your support and kindness to us all.
Warmly, Diane and Rudy (in spirit)
Hi again,
Thought you might like to see this pic of Rudy!
that is soooooo sad
I know how you feel my dog got hit by a car today. (it was just 8 stapels and a big red mark)
my dog got hit by a car 2 days ago and he died at the moment. i cant stop crying and thinking of him. he was my companion. ive had him since he around 10 days and he had to live such a short time and die that way. now just when i see the road that he got hit by the car and died makes me want to go back in time and change everything i wish i could do that and have my buddy boy back..!!!!:(
u r really lucky that your dog survived u should be very happy and always take good care of ur dog cuz she looks beautiful and i know that she is amazing to all of ya
I am so glad I happened on to this site....Our beloved family dog, a chocolate lab named Dexter, got hit by a car right outside our house (a residential street with speed limit of 25 MPH) by a hit and run driver. He sustained severe trauma to his right side, namely 4 fx ribs, a flail chest, and pulmonary contusions. He was intubated immediately at the vet, and on continuous pain medication. The next day they were able to extubate him, but needed the keep the pain meds going at a high dose. He had to lay on his right side only due to the flail chest. He had IV fluids going, and a catheter in his bladder. He survived that day. On day two after getting hit, the vet told me on the phone that he was stable, and they were going to try to feed him. I visited at 6:30 pm. I though he looked terrible. It haunts me. He died 5 minutes after I left. It was the most horrifying and traumatic thing I have been through. I have another lab who now lays under my bed all of the time because she misses him so much...This just happened two days ago. I am heart broken, and know you all know how I feel. Thanks for listening. I found car parts out in the street, and think the car must have been going at least 45 MPH....never stopped.
Im glad karma is okay. My dog boss got ran over by a truck at 3 months old. Shattered his hind leg. But after 6 months made a full recovery. He is three now. And just got hit by another car. ... he is one tough dog. Money wise he came out better than the car did. I can't stand to think of lossing a loved animal. Money isn't and issue when its for a loved part of ur family. To Imelda. Really!! Yea that sucks. But a car can be fixed.
Does anyone else see the irony in "Karma" getting hit by a car?
Thank you for this. My princess tiffy got killed by a car on Tuesday and I am heartbroken. She saw another dog across the street and bolted. She was only 8lbs and ran right into the tire and broke her neck. She was bleeding out of her ear and passed away instantly, i saw her eyes just become blank. I can't stop crying. It was so horrific to watch and i can't stop replaying the moment in my head. I feel so guilty and a horrible owner. I just wish i could of changed that day. just 1 minute after and the car and dog wouldn't of been there. i miss her so much. she was my bebe! How long will it take to feel better again? I feel my heart is scattered!
I am so blessed for all the dogs that did get hit and survived! it is a true realization that life is so precious and can be ripped from you in a second. Thank you all for sharing your stories, i know don't feel so all alone in my misery!
The lady up thr st hit my charly she stoped and just drove off like nothing didnt apologize or anything, then my husband called from jail and asked me babes wheres are baby charly and I had to tell him cause charly has bells aroumd his lil gurry neck, my husband cried souch
I'm happy your dog survived, she is very beautiful.
My dog got hit by a car today and unfortunately stopped breathing and died before we even reached the vet.
i have a pug and yesterday my best friend was hit by a old guy who shouldnt even have a car with how bad his eye sight is... but any way i got off work and came home charles (my pug) was on his chain and i took him off and i usally take him inside but my wife told me the other night that he pee"ed on the rug in the basement so i kept him out side so i could visually see him pee and he got excited and ran out in the street thinking we were going on a car ride seeing as we didnt go directly inside and the i heard a thud and a cry i ran to the street and saw charles trying to run back to the house from under the vehicle and watched as the back tire ran over his backside and i live in a small town in south dakota there is no emergecy vet around ... besides that i thought he was dead so i ran after the car yelling and cussing i cuaght up to it kicked the car yelled for the driver to get out and its this old man from out of town he was like "what happend "he had no idea what he did so i explain in tears and said sorry about the kicking ... and thats when i looked over and saw charles on his back feet up i ran to him picked him up and the closest vet that was open was 90 miles away i got in the envoy and started speeding duing 110 mph in a 65 10 min later cops pulled me over while on the way expained why and he even gave me a escort there at a lesser speed of course 85 mph i thanked him and turns out he had 3 broken ribs 4 fractured ribs bleeding in his lungs and lived charles in recovering now with me right at my side thank god for small town highway patrol and the vet who saved his life...
Your lucky I'm 11 years old, you got a chance to save her, my baby Pug must have ran into a car because my moms neace found her in their yard because they live next to us and she was playing with her 5 year old brother, saw something in the far corner of their yard and found her dead:( I've hade chickens die before but this hurts very much because she was like one of the kids;( ;( ;( ;( ;(
DOG ON DARK ROAD LATE AT NIGHT WITH NO LIGHT TO SHOW THE DOG EXCEPT HEADLIGHTS FROM MY CAR, SPEED LIMIT IS 50 MPH.
CAR IS IN ONCOMING SIDE OF ROAD YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE.
DO I HIT DOG AND POSSIBLY KILL IT, OR SWEARVE AND HIT CAR HEAD ON, YOU DECIDE?
DEAD DOG!!!!
My dog also got hit by a car. The front door was blown open and my dogs got out sometime between 2 and 5 in the morning and we looked for 2 hours and found my 2 year old lab laying in the street with my older dog licking her face. She was bleeding from the mouth and had thrown up and when to the bathroom on her self. We got a board and put took her to the vet. She has now bine there for 3 days on pain killer intell we can come up with 5,000 dollors for her surgery she needs to repair her badly broken legs and torn lung. Its heart braking to have to go through all this she is our baby not even 2 yet. our oppions are to come up with 5 grand or put her to sleep.): We cant even pay rent after my boyfriend lost his job 2 weeks ago let alone 5 grand to save her.
My dog got hit by a car and died 3 weeks ago yesterday. She drug herself about 100 ft back to the house and died under some tall shrubs we have near our house. There is a window that leads to some stairs (that goes to our basement). Today (this morning) my husband turned on the light and saw her for just a brief moment. She lifted her head and she was gone. What do you guys make of this? We miss her dearly and think of her often. Do you guys think she was telling us that she's ok now?
I am not sure what to make of it.
SO TERRIBLE..HOPE TO SEE YOUR LOVELY DOG RECOVER,.MY DOG SOSY JUST PASSED A WAY WHILE BACK DUE TO CAR BUMP..I AM SO TOUCH AND CAN'T THINK THAT SHE'S ALREADY GONE..MY CHILDREN ARE CRYING TOO....UNTIL NOW...POOR SOSY.WE LOVE YOU.
Very sorry about Sosy...but happy for Karma's recovery. Lost my 7yo sweet std poodle several years ago when my precious angel got loose off her leash and got hit and thrown by a truck on the road. (My young nieces sneaked out to walk my dog on a busy street without my knowing it.) Crystal died as we arrived in our vet's parking lot. Devastating to this day. Luv you forever my sweet angel Crystal! Hugs to Karma.
Christine & AngelKiss, My heart cries for your recent losses, so fast but painfully traumatic. (Christine, our Crystal (read above) mysteriously appeared to 2 family members twice, as did my father to me days after he passed, wearing a big smile & looking happy. I believe spirits need to say good-bye properly before moving into the light.) Since losing Crystal, we've since adopted 4 std poodles (2 rescues) in Crystal's honor, all a loving joy. One is so much like Crystal in spirit and personality, it's as though Crystal never left us...still gives me goosebumps. There is still much love on the other side :)
I AM IN SHOCK RIGHT NOW..... THE AMOUNT OF DOGS HIT THIS SAME EVINGINS. WHAT THE HECK. MY DOG WAS ALSO HIT BY A TRUCK AND FEELING VERY SORE. SCARED THE HECK OUT OF OUR WHOLE FAMILY. COME TO FIND OUT ONE OF OUR NIEGHBORS HIT AND RAN HER. BEEN A MESS. LIKE I SAID I'M SHOCKED AT ALL THE ACCIDENTS. GOD BLESS ALL OUR ANIMALS.
HEHE guess thats some BAD karma!
I hope your dog gets better.my cousin's dog went through that too.
what should I have done if I saw a small puppy getting crushed to death by a car in front of my eyes
Thanks for the help. Because of this web site i knew what to look out for! my dog is doing ok now but her back leg still gives her trouble, but i have a brave gloden retriver thats very luky!AAnd tell Karma i said hi.
i am a 11 years old girl who just 4 weeks ago jumped out of the truck my dad owns. my dads girl friend was driving and we were like 2blocks awway from home and she started making a funny noise like she was ckhoking so i natrully asked (not knowing she couldn't here me)asked "jeana are you okay" she didn't answer.and then there was a thud and the blue truck jumped and i lokked forward and saw just in time the 35 speed limit sighn go over the truck. and emidiatly i thought a' she;s having a stroke or heart attack' and we by this time jena was shaking her hands and her tounge was looled out so we wee like in front of the aparments that were in front of my grandmas house so i turned torward jenae and said "jenae i'm gonna go get help" and i turned torward the passanger side and opened it (don't get me wrong we were going like 70mph) and it buffeted me back alittle btu i opened it and stepped out onto the moving road and tipped sideways onto my left arm. i heard a crunch. i got up (don't know how or if i had been uncosssiues when i stepped out of the moving vehicle) i was crying, standing i the middle of the road screaming "Jeana" "jena". the car was still moving and it got onto a patch of grass right behind it lay a thick of trees. so not wanting to see what happened next i ran to my granmas house and told her "debbie debbie she went down the lane into the trees" (debbie is my dads ex) grandama asked whos debbie? i remebered jeana "jena went itnto the trees" grandma looked at lee. (her boyfriend) and said "go check it out" so now
my arm is better but i had broken my shoulder, and fractered my pinckie, wrist and hand.
jeana's hole left side of her left leg is hattered and broken. it turns out jeana had a sezer.
any qeustions please anwer back (comment on dosie's site)
bury it
My dog got hit by a car and I found him outside the road of my house . I brought him back in the house and he is whining and trembling . The vet is close as its night time and I hope my dog can bare till tomorrow to see a vet ..
Last night, I accidentally struck & killed my neighbor's dog as I was pulling into my dead end street. Both the owner & one of our other neighbors saw it happen. Apparently, the little guy was across the street from his home and suddenly darted back into the street just as I was going by. He was killed almost instantly.
It was like a nightmare. The owners are devastated, and although they have assured me that they don't blame me, I couldn't feel worse. I can't get the image of his little body laying in the streetout of my mind, or stop hearing the heartbreaking wails of his mommy & daddy. She was too distraught to function & her husband didn't want to leave her alone,so I told them what I knew of the local emergency vet and what thier options would be in terms of disposal.According to thier wishes, I took his body to the emergency vet & handled all of the costs. I don't know what else I can do. Is there a protocol that follows a situation like this? I just wish I'd come home maybe 5 minutes later. These poor people. And just before Christmas.
tonight, my sons were out walking with my daughter's yorkie pom, cocoa chanel, and she was hit by the neighbor lady's suv. She doesn't seem to be injured or sore other than her one eye seems irritated. She doesn't seem to have any of the symptoms of shock that I have read about. She is running and jumping, she ate her dinner just fine, and she has been playing with her tennis balls. Do I have to keep her from sleeping, just in case? I don't have enough money to take her to the vet and I learned when she got sick awhile back that I have to pay upfront or they won't treat the animal.
my rescue dog got hit this morning. He is ten pounds and suffered bangs and head trauma. I am lucky, my vet referred us to the emergency hospital, they gave him a round of meds to reduce brain swelling. I had a call earlier that he is responding with vision in both eyes again. The dr said he is cautiously hopeful for recovery. I am just praying he makes it. I will take xtra care this time to make sure he doesn't get past anymore gates. Thanks for the story... I am encouraged.
I am feeling very sorry for all these stories and special to the first post of Karma. She is very cute. I came to thus site looking advice on the internet because my german shephard Mason and myself got hit by a 86 year old driver. I was walking my 2 fogs as ussual and he was driving faster than ussual for a condo community in Fl. I went to the hospital and txs God no fractures but my dog, i saw him fly as he received the impact as well so bad that his car windows crashed. He can walk fine and is hungry and no apparent injuries. I reviewed him everywhere and pressed his ribs. Paws, legs and seems no pain byt wonder if he may later develop any consequences of this accident. I am unemployed and all ER request payments upfront. Wonder if any of you have any advice. I have auto insurance so I called Geico but the adjuster will call me next week. Tomorrow is the end of the year and only hope my Mason will be ok.
much better dorsie and sorry i haven't gotten to type back sooner i just got a new lap top
Our dog Biscuit pulled out of his collar, ran into the street after our neighbour's cat and was hit by a car. After spending nine days at the vets, he's home but has become aggressive towards our youngest daughter. She was the one who spoke to him first and tried to calm him while people were jacking the car up. Any suggestions on how to deal with this?
My dog got hit last night and the guy that hit him doesn't even care and refuses to help with the vet bills...My puppy is now gone forever in heaven.
MY MOM WAS CLEANING HER ROOM, SHE HEARD A DOG SCREAMING SO LOUD SO SHE RAN OUTSIDE AND SHE SAW MY DOG RUNNING TOWARDS HER. THE CAR RAN OVER HIS STOMACH AND HIS LEGS, HE WAS WHIMPERING SO BAD. I HOPE HE WILL GET WELL SOON.PRAY FOR HIM.....PLEASE, HIS NAME IS SNOOPY

I just lost my dog on jan 27th;( he was a yorkie and his name was Kobe! My mom let him out to potty and he ran out into the road and got hit and the driver took off.. My mom Took him inside and wrapped him in a towel bc he was crying..than she called
Me! It was my nightmare coming true.. I sped home and took him to the vet! He was normal.. Wasn't crying. Maybe bc he was with his mommy.. They took him to the back and I was patiently waiting.. Than he came out and told me that he had a broken back and there was nothing they could do about it! So I had to put him down... :( I miss my son!
i want to share what happened an hour ago: i have a dog named "pampy'.. i was leaving the house to get my scooter to the nearest gasoline station and i didn't noticed that my dog is following me from behind, then he ran suddenly that he passes me and waits for me on the other side of the road.. i was shouting his name to come back and asking him not to go there because it is dangerous.. --but its too late, he was hit by a bus.. i saw my dog flew and bounce off the road.. my heart crashed, tears fell from my eyes.. i ran to him and carry his blood soaked body on our home.. i checked for his injuries and saw an open deep wound that you could see his bones.. and i think there is a high chance that there is a broken bone inside him.. i gave him a first aid (treating ONLY his wounds).. he was still alive and fighting for his life and the pain he was suffering.. unluckily i couldn't get him to the vet right now because here in the philippines there is no 24/7 vet clinic nearest me.. they just operate from morning til' afternoon (8am-5pm).. it's already 12:43am here by the way.. now, i'm waiting for the time to passed by so i finally get my dog to the vet clinic this morning.. i couldn't sleep, i was crying and hoping that my dog will be fine.. please pray for my dog! :'(

Excellent advice, well and clearly presented. Emergency medicine for any animal is traumatic, terrifying, and expensive. My heart goes out to you, Dorsi, and I am so glad Karma will recover to slime your face (as my husband phrases it) many, many more times to come. Stroke her gently for me, will you?
