President Obamas First Dog Bo: The Portuguese Water Dog
65The Presidential First Dog "Bo"
"Just adorable" is todays picture of President Obama running though the White House with first dog Bo. And I can only imagine the thrill presidential kids Malia and Sasha are feeling playing with the puppy that daddy Obama had promised them during his presidential campaign.
"Bo", as the new presidential first dog has been named, just took up digs in his new house today on Tuesday April 14,2009.
After unsuccessfully being placed in a former home, Bo was given to the Obama family by the Obamas friend senator Ted Kennedy. Although the Obamas had originally said they were going to get their first presidential pooch from the pound, the Obamas accepted the gift of the Portuguese Water dog last week, causing a stir among some animal rescue organizations who had hoped the Obama family would get a pound puppy.

Doens't Bo Qualify as a Rescue Dog?
Myself, I think Bo the Portuguese water dog somewhat qualifies as a rescue dog since he has been "re-placed" with the Obama family after an unsuccessful "first family" placement (now that's kind of ironic, don't you think, that Bo's first family was not the first family?) Anyway, I think the Obamas's did a marvelous job at getting this puppy for their family. Those of us that love dogs know there is nothing like a canine companion. In those stressful times of our lives our canine companions offer us the best friendship available to man. Now the question is, I wonder just who's dog this will end up being - President Obamas or the kids?

The dog is kind of ugly looking.
I like that Obama waited till the time was right and for the right dog - rather than instantly gratifying the kids with a puppy as soon as they moved in. A good life lesson - waiting till the time is right.
Thankfully, this is not something the citizens have to vote upon and approve.
Please, may the President and his family be able to make some personal choices for themsleves that do not affect the whole country? At least they deserve that.
Nice hub. --and I don't care one way or the other-- especially if they are happy with their decision.
I can understand people offering criticism for political policies and decisions, but not for this choice.
Portuguese Water Dogs are going to become very popular .... nice hub Dorsi, and i hope that more dogs are given good homes because they are good for mental as well as physical health - and they are not allowed to touch our chocolate !
I think it is great that the Obamas have a new dog, and if the type of dog they have bothers anyone, then you just have way too much judgement in your heart. His daughters are probably enjoying the dog, and that is all that matters.
Awww, isn't he cute! First time I've ever heard of a Portuguese Water Dog...
He's soooo cute! But then they all are!
What a delightful article and puppie. Who wouldn't fall in love with that little guy...Thanks for all the information on BO...Sounds like the right pick! Kids and dogs---a natural combination.
Obama ji aap ki kuta ka naam rakhna osama..??????
I wrote a hub about this too. Have you seen it? I think it's a bad idea that he got a purebred dog, but I understand why. He could have at least found a dog breed that would have worked and gone to a breed specific rescue, if he wanted to guarantee the breed's hypo-allergenic characteristic. Did you see where at this moment there is a PWD for adoption in general area? He could have adopted one even though they are rare to be found, it does happen.
I think this is going to end up a bad idea, for the breed.
Cute hub, as cute as Bo. "D
Bo is totally adorable. I understand these are very busy dogs and must be kept busy or they will become quite creative! I hope Bo doesn't eat Abe Lincoln's hat or tear up the rose garden. But I agree that people are making too big of an issue of a dog. Certain people want to jump down OBama's throat whatever he does.
As I myself wrote in my hub about dogs, Bo is adorable. His luck was granted to him already by his being a pure breed. Obama is free to make any personal choices for his family. It just looks and sounds not to his advantage after all the bragging he was making. He is in front of everybody; he can follow his plans and promises more precisely. He accepted a gift and it’s nice. For me it doesn’t matter what kind of dog he takes for his kids, it’s nice that the girls will have a pet. He can afford to take another pet, may be one of those adorable heroes I wrote about.
First citizen, first lady, first children (grammartically wrong) and now ladies and gentlemen please welcome the FIRST DOG "BO.... BO BO". No offence meant Dorsi, I am really good fan of yours and I also like Obama but why is that anything done by celebrities (including political celebrities) becomes a big news?
I guess now Water Dogs are going to be a big favorite among pet lovers!
I never heard of a Portuguese water dog until they got this dog. And he is NOT ugly, I think he is adorable and I love his front white socks. Yeah it would have been nice to adopt a rescue dog, but if they hadn't taken Bo, Where or what really would have happen to him? So long as he got a good home and will be loved that's what really is important.
I too agree, let the Obama family have some privacy. But I guess being the President, you don't get that right....too bad...
The Obama's can get whatever dog they want from where they choose. Whether it be a breeder or a rescue. Personally I don't like PWD as a breed, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. My only hope is that all the people now inspired to own this breed understand all of the responsibility. They can become a grooming nightmare when they are not taken care of. If you decide to get a PWD, please for the sake of the dog make sure you can afford regular grooming as well as all the other necessities.
Once again mother nice hub. Frankly it really shouldn't matter too much on what dog he picks for the family. Yes be careful due to allergies, and a dog that doesn't have a bad temperment! Even though Obama is the President of the U.S....he is still human! He was careful when he picked it...and he waited until he felt there was a fit! They should really lay off all the drama and let the man get the dog he wants!
Bo is very luck to play with obama he is really so sweet dog
there soooooooooooo cute when their running

I think Bo is adorable.
And I do consider him a rescue dog even though he was returned to the breeder. My cat Boo had the same thing happen to him; he was returned and I got him. Besides, since Bo was a gift I don't think the Obama's should be criticized...
