The Restraining Order: A Short Story

Updated on January 18, 2013

She was a beautiful woman with simmering blue eyes. Her heart however was ugly - twisted, perverted and evil to the bone. She hadn't really wanted to get pregnant 3 years before but at the time it seemed like the only way she could hold onto her boyfriend. Relationships for her never lasted more than a few months. As soon as her boyfriends found out how controlling she was, she suddenly found herself alone again.

Not this time though. She had trapped him and she had trapped him good. Ever since she had gotten pregnant Jason had hung on to her every word and every command. It was like she was the puppet-master and Jason was the puppet. Ask and she would receive.

After the baby was born things got even better - now she knew she really had Jason in her control. There was no way she was letting go of him now - or him of her. Jason loved his son Dylan way too much for that. Dylan had become his life and everything in the world meant nothing if Jason could not be with his son. And Nicole knew it. She used every chance she could to manipulate and control the relationship between son and father.

Ever jealous and controlling, Nicole watched and knew of Jason's every move. She knew where he was, when he was coming home and every phone number in his cell phone. Jason, on the other hand, seemed quite content to let Nicole run his life as long as little Dylan was in the picture. He loved his son fiercely, surrounding the boy with lots of attention and love. Dylan was the love of Jason's life, and Jason was the man that Dylan waited everyday for after his shift at work was over.

One night after Jason went to sleep, Nicole peeked into Jason's phone as she did every night, just to make sure Jason wasn't talking to anyone she didn't know. This time though a new number popped up in Jason's phone - it was a local number with a girls name - Sharon. Nicole started shaking and her anger grew. She knew that Jason was cheating on her. There was NO other explanation for this girls number to be in his phone! She knew his every move!

Seething, with a jealous rage boiling up in her, she stood over the bed and stared at the sleeping Jason. "I knew it!", she thought to herself. "I knew he was cheating on me!", her thoughts raged. White hot anger built up quickly in her as she thought about how she could hurt him and get back at him for cheating on her. She devised a plan, hastily made but in her anger it seemed right.

She walked into the bathroom and started scratching her face with her long perfectly done nails. She forcefully hit her cheek on the towel rack and examined her face. A big red blotch that was slowly turning blue started forming on her face. Then she started screaming as loudly as she could and grabbed the phone.

Dialing 911, she had now worked herself into a frenzy and Jason woke up out of his sleep to a crazed Nicole screaming at him. By this time she had dropped the phone and was throwing herself at the door. Jason got up and grabbed her just as the police pushed into the slightly opened door that Nicole had left open.

Guns drawn they yelled at Jason, "Take you hands off of her!. Put your hands behind your back! On the floor!". Jason's fuzzy mind could not comprehend what was happening - it had all happened so fast. Maybe they had been burglarized and they mistakenly thought he was the burglar?

"OH my God!", Nicole screamed, "He's going to kill me now!!!". Jason laid on the floor frozen "What in the hell was going on?" his mind kept chanting, "What is she talking about??".

Little Dylan stood in the doorway crying "dada" and Jason was frozen in time. Screaming "dada" as he rushed over to his daddy, a policeman whisked the little boy up and gave him to his mom while he continued screaming.

Handcuffed, they took him down to the police station and booked Jason. The next day Nicole went down and filed a restraining order for her and her son citing that "Jason was a danger to his son". Jason sat in jail facing domestic violence charges while Nicole contrived on how to use this latest turn of events to control her errant cheating husband.

After filing the restraining order, Nicole went home to find the phone ringing. A young sweet girl on the other line asked if Jason was home. Rage returning, Nicole spat out, "NO!" He's not here! How dare you call this house?".

The girl named Sharon quickly tried to explain. "Mam, I'm sorry to disturb you but my name is Sharon. Your husband Jason was supposed to come down here to pick up the special bouquet of flowers he ordered for your anniversary. He wanted to surprise you but I couldn't get ahold of him on his cell phone and we are about to close for the day. I am so sorry I bothered you".
