Valentines Day Poems - Loving, Cheesy or Classic?

Valentines Day is one of those rare times during the year when we can get serious, loving or downright cheesy (or even a little mean?) by selecting that special poem for our mate, lover or special person (or not so special person). There is probably no other time during the year in which we search fearlessly for the special poem that conveys our undying (or perhaps anguished) love that we have for our loved one. I think the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning sums up Valentines Day well with her well known classic poem:

HOW do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I love thee to the depth and breadth and height

My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight

For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.

I love thee to the level of everyday's

Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.

I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;

I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.

I love thee with the passion put to use

In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.

I love thee with a love I seemed to lose

With my lost saints, -I love thee with the breath,

Smiles, tears, of all my life! - and, if God choose,

I shall but love thee better after death.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

(This is a beautiful poem, don't you think?)

My Own Poem for my Husband this Valentines Day

OK so now that we have touched a little bit on a classic Valentines Day poem and a not to so nice Valentines Day greeting, let's touch on some of my own Valentines Day poetry (this is for my husband this year, newly inspired by writing this hub)

Learning Together

It hasn't been easy.

In fact it's been hard.

No one ever told me that love could hurt,

or scar,

and even be painful.

But they also did not tell me

How glorious,

How wonderful,

and how kind Love could be.

Love is never easy.

This I have come to know

But I am blessed beyond measure

To learn that Love is being

together with you.

Happy Valentines Day !

Cheesy, Funny and (Mean) Valentines Day Poems

For the cheesy in us (perhaps it's easier to tell someone we love them by being funny?) you can always pick out a funny Valentines Day at the store or you can check out these sites with some pretty funny Valentines Day poems from Poem Source and Poetry Verses by Jon Bratton:

My Valentine, I love thee

More than a dog loves a tree

More than a lumberjack

Loves a cucumber snack

Or a fish loves staying wet

More even than

Romeo loved Juliet

(And here is one example of a not so nice Valentines Day Card but perhaps it's appropriate to your situation?)

Hindsight

I said to you, "Oh, please be mine;

Be mine forever, Valentine."

I must have seemed like quite a fool,

Although I thought I was being cool.

I swore that we would never part,

As I put my hand upon my heart.

Had I been thinking with my head,

I'd probably have fled instead.
